PROCRASTINATION~

 Wellness Wednesday

Procrastinate is defined as “to put off doing something usually unpleasant or burdensome until a future time or to postpone habitually.”  There are times “justify” my reason for not doing something (SUCH AS WRITING THIS WEEKLY TIP), only to realize it true word for this IS PROCRASTINATION!! I have found a simple way to help overcome this thief of productivity, here is the STING technique from Rita Emmett’s book, The Procrastinator’s Handbook.  S.T.I.N.G. is an acronym meaning:
  • S – Select one thing and do it.  Focus on this one thing and don’t multi-task.  You’ll be more efficient and more productive, and you’ll complete your task sooner.
  • T – Time yourself.  Use a timer and set it for a predetermined time (usually 1 hour).
  • I – Ignore everything else.  Ignore distractions such as phone call, e-mails, time wasters and everything else except a fire in the kitchen until your time is up or task complete.
  • N – No breaks.  Except for maybe a bathroom, don’t take any breaks until your time is up or task complete.
  • G – Give yourself a reward.  Once you complete your task or your time is up, give yourself a treat.  A treat could be something as simple as a break from work, calling a friend or a new DVD.
Always start with a list and do your most dreaded task first to get it out of the way, feel the burden lift as you mark it off that list! You have just cut down on the dread time; now keep moving down the list!  Hopefully this advice will help you take the “STING” out of procrastination.
